Cooking together, sharing food and joy. Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences participates in the national Free Heri Heri initiative! On June 29th we will hand out free Heri Heri. But why exactly?
In memory of the ancestors and in commemoration of the abolition of slavery by the Dutch Kingdom, Free Heri Heri was created to draw attention and create awareness for this historic day. Launched on July 1 in 2020, Free Heri Heri is served annually across the country on July 1!
You can participate in two ways: Cooking and/or handing out.
Free Heri Heri for All is an organisation founded on July 1st 2020 to mark the historic day of the abolition of slavery by the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The culinary dish, Heri Heri, was once a daily meal cooked by enslaved ancestors on plantations during the transatlantic slave trade. Today it is considered a delicacy. With the annual celebration on 1 July, Free Heri Heri for All will distribute this dish nationwide as a tribute to our ancestors and to commemorate its history and lasting impact in the present.
