introduction
Welcome to the digital Keti Koti magazine of the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences. On 1 July this year, during Keti Koti, it will have been 150 years since the abolition of slavery. Last year, the Netherlands officially apologised for its slavery past.
Keti Koti is a topic that is talked about a lot, but not everyone knows what Keti Koti means. In this special year of remembrance, the Board feels it is important to raise awareness of Keti Koti among staff and students. That is why there is this Keti Koti magazine and there are various special activities for us to attend.
The Keti Koti Working Group got to work and came up with a varied programme of interesting events. Some examples: A theatre performance that you can attend about the resistance fighter Tula. There will be dialogue afterwards. Or join the city walk Colonial Rotterdam and see the city from a different perspective. On 30 June, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences will lay a wreath during the official commemoration at the slavery monument. It’s special to attend this together, therefor everyone is welcome to join in.
This magazine also includes all programme components, and you can register for the events. Read the background articles and expand your knowledge. Be surprised by the story series “Woven Identities.” These are special stories from students about the connection of their cultural identity on this topic.
On behalf of the entire working group and student platform INLCUDED, have fun reading! Will we see you at one of the programme sections?
